GFRIEND (여자친구) is back with their third mini-album SNOWFLAKE. The sound of this mini album is a bit more mature compared to their prior hits Glass Bead (유리구슬) and Me Gustas Tu (오늘부터 우리는).
INTRO - Snowflake
The intro song is just a short instrumental that you can hear in the background of the teaser video for the title track Rough (시간을 달려서).
Rough (시간을 달려서)
The title track Rough (시간을 달려서) might not seem as poppy or accessible as their prior tracks but you can feel the emotion as they sing it. And with the music video, it helps to visualize some of the emotion through the dancing and visuals.
Rough (시간을 달려서) Music Video
The video is loosely based on the anime “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (which is pretty close to the literal title of the song).
Looks like the school girl theme is coming to the end as it shows them “graduating” from school and seemingly to go on with their lives. But something seems missing as they all reunite toward the end to remember the happy times.
Say My Name (내 이름을 불러줘)
Say My Name is a bit more of a sassy midtempo R&B single, which could have been a single on its own as well through, it wouldn’t really match their image for the title track. If they didn’t do the song, I could see KARA (if they were still together) or maybe even BoA… it has that kinda shifty beat that they can do.
Luv Star (사랑별)
Now Luv Star goes back to their usual cutey bubble gum kind of style… complete with a cute skit like intro. The song just oozes sweetness with it’s really bubbly toe tappy beat in the chorus, and high pitched vocals. Might be a bit too cute for some, but for their male fans, I’m sure they’ll love this one.
Someday (그런 날엔)
Another song that fits their image. It kinda has a anime theme song kinda feel again, with its violin/string accompaniment and just how the song is structured… if you watch anime intros and outros, I think you know what I mean. It’s not as cutesy as Luv Star, except maybe during the bridge, but still an upbeat happy song.
The one slow song type ballad on the mini album which they had used to promote during their comeback week last week. The song has some nice harmonies and is a nice way to wind down the album.
Overall the mini album is very good and pretty much the sound that you would expect from GFRIEND. The only song that is a little out of place, not necessarily in a bad way, is Say My Name. It has a totally different sound from the rest, but it might be their way of showing how they can be more than just the cute school girl type. If you’re a fan, you definitely have to get this mini album. If you’re just starting to get into them, you should check out their prior songs as well as you won’t be disappointed there either.
